Piracicaba is a type of mini broccoli bred in the city of the same name in Brazil. 'Sidekick' is our selected strain of Piracicaba. We began our selection project for Sidekick in 2017 because we felt the commercially available strains did not meet our quality expectations; they tended to have floppy plants and lacked uniformity in head size and color. We selected for an upright plant; uniform, dark green heads; and strong side-shoot production. Sidekick produces large quantities of sweet and tender florets on very large, high-yielding plants. If harvested regularly, Sidekick will produce abundant side shoots for at least a month. Selected by the late Dr. John Navazio at Johnny's.
